VS-871/VS-37 flew the AF-2 Guardian from 1953 to 1955

Originally a Reserve Squadron, VS-37's designation was VS-871. VS-871 was called to active duty the 1st of July, 1951 and redesignated VS-37 on 24 June, 1953.The next month saw the arrival of the first AF Guardian.Click here for more detailed history.
VS-37 began the transition from AF-2 Guardians to S2F-1 Trackers in 1955. It was just prior to this time the Squadron began displaying three flash stipes (Roostertail) on the vertical stabilizer. These destinctive tail markings remained with the Squadron until its disestablishment on 1 March, 1995.

VS-37 transitioned from S2-G Trackers to S3-A Vikings in 1976 and was the last Sea Control Squadron to retire the S2 Tracker.

During it's 49 year history, VS-37 had several different unofficial nicknames. It is thought that the squadron was refered to as the "Boomerangers" during the time they were designated VS-871 but this has not been confirmed. No specific date is known as to when the distinctive "Flash" tail markings were first used but after the squadron was transfered to NAS North Island, they were jokingly refered to as the "Roostertails". "Sawbucks" is thought to be the callsign used by the squadron during shipboard deployment. No record can be found of any Offical nickname.
